Volunteer Policy & Procedures

 Volunteer With Us

Thank you for your interest in serving at our Houston Food Bank Mobile Distribution site. Volunteers are essential to helping us serve our community with excellence, dignity, and care.

How to Volunteer

To serve at our location, advance sign-up and training are required:

Important:

  • Volunteers must contact Pastor Diane ahead of time
  • Groups must be scheduled in advance (preferably by the Wednesday prior to distribution)
  • On-site training/briefing is required before serving
  • Not all volunteers can be accommodated each week

Walk-up volunteers will not be accepted

Arrival & Location

  • Arrival Time: 8:00 AM (required for training/briefing)
  • Distribution Begins: 9:00 AM
  • Entrance: Bay Area Boulevard
  • Check in with Pastor Diane or the site leader upon arrival

Who Can Volunteer

  • Individuals, families, and groups are welcome
  • Youth under 18 are considered minors

Minors must:

  • Be accompanied by a parent/guardian
  • Have a completed permission form on file

Forms can be turned in at check-in.

 Required Training Documents

All volunteers (especially students) should review the following prior to serving:

  • Volunteer Instructions:

Volunteers will also sign off on training acknowledgment at check-in.

What to Wear

For safety and efficiency:

  • Closed-toe shoes are required
  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Avoid short shorts or leggings as pants
  • Long hair should be tied back
  • Sunscreen and hats are encouraged

Volunteer Responsibilities

Volunteer roles may include:

  • Sorting and distributing food
  • Assisting with traffic flow or check-in
  • Loading food into vehicles
  • Clean-up after distribution

Roles may vary depending on the needs of each event.

Safety & Conduct Guidelines

To ensure a safe and respectful environment:

  • Follow all instructions from site leaders
  • Participate in required training/briefing
  • Use proper lifting techniques (ask for help when needed)
  • Do not climb on trucks or unsafe surfaces
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Follow all food safety guidelines (handwashing, gloves, etc.)
  • Treat all guests and volunteers with dignity and respect

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, in alignment with USDA guidelines

 Important Notes

  • Volunteers may receive food only after distribution ends, if available
  • Do not eat or take food during the event
  • All food is intended for distribution and not for resale
  • Events are held rain or shine
